Description:
Participants will learn and develop skills to listen deeply to a client, sifting through the information shared to support themselves and the client to begin hearing the spoken stories.
Most often the process of listening for a client’s story begins at the time of the assessment and continues into the counseling sessions. Clear skills and steps for supporting the client to experience their own internalized stories that have developed throughout their life can support the client to transform those stories into options for change in their life. The counselor joins with the client in the developing of a richer and deeper story of their life.
Part of this process requires the counselor to listen deeply, ask questions, and assist the client in identifying and sharing patterns of significant life events. Identifying significant life events and unpacking the story allows for a more clear and more vivid description of those events leading to a deeper awareness of their story, both strengths and struggles. Case studies will include both mental health and substance use.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Develop an understanding of how we all use story or narrative to define and make sense of our world experience moving into substance use and mental health recovery.
2. Develop narrative skills to assess a client for their internalized story and support them to bring new meaning to their past, present, and future stories through skills such as self-inquiry, using the miracle question, developing the story through the story wire, and developing a new narrative story.
3. Participants will learn 6 plus skills and exercises to support the client to explore deeper meaning of their past and current stories. Skills will include music and artistic expression as well. Case studies will incorporate both substance use and mental health recovery.
