DESCRIPTION: David Grand, PhD describes Brainspotting, “Teaching, supporting the brain to scan and heal itself which in turn heals the remaining body.”

Brainspotting utilizes the visual field to access brainspots that hold traumatic memory in the brain as the body responds by sending reflexive cues. Once found, the brain and body seek to heal itself by turning its focus upon the stored stress or trauma, releasing it from the cellular body and restoring balance and homeostasis. The cognition then may restructure based upon the person’s values, i.e. acceptance, understanding, compassion.

David Grand’s book offers several case studies. Brainspotting: The Revolutionary New Therapy For Rapid and Effective Change by David Grand.

Objectives:

1.    Develop a basic understanding of how trauma is stored both in the brain and the body.

2.    Develop a basic understanding of the fight, flight, freeze responses.

3.    Learn and practice 3 skills in the Brainspotting method that applies to both mental health and substance use.
